Adonis at Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands started as a sweaty little experiment in 2017 in a tiny shack packed with 150 people. I got to photograph its very first edition, camera in hand, capturing the drag queens as they transformed backstage preparing for the night, dabbing on glitter and wigs, before stepping into the neon-lit chaos. My photography sought to capture the raw, intimate moments that happen behind the scenes.
Beyond being a party, Adonis pays tribute to the Black queer roots of modern nightlife, embracing the legacy of ‘70s disco culture. It has become a beacon of inclusivity at Lowlands Festival, offering a space where everyone - queer or not - can immerse themselves in freedom and self-expression.
My pictures were published on i-D Netherlands, and the article is no longer online after Vice Netherlands, the mother company of i-D Netherlands, declared bankruptcy. However, snippets of the article with my pictures can be seen here, here, and here.
